Florida Car Accident Statistics

Experienced Injury Lawyers Passionate About Keeping South Florida Roads Safe Despite Shocking Florida Car Accident Statistics

As a whole, Florida car accident statistics are alarming, to say the least—in 2017, U.S. News and World Report found that Florida had the third-highest number of car crashes out of all 50 states.  In fact, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles reported that, on average, a shocking 1,098 car crashes occur every day in Florida, and many of these car accidents result in injuries and even fatalities.  For many Florida residents, this comes as no surprise, as our population surges with tourists and seasonal residents every winter and the roadways simply cannot be expanded quickly enough to keep up.

At Lawlor, White & Murphey, our experienced car accident injury lawyers are committed to doing our part to make Florida roadways safer for all involved.  While the statistics on Florida car accidents are alarming, what’s potentially more alarming is that a large percentage of these crashes could be avoided if drivers were taking proper safety precautions on the roads.  We are passionate about doing our part to turn Florida’s statistics around by holding negligent drivers fully accountable for the consequences of their careless or reckless driving. We believe that when drivers know that there will be consequences for their negligent driving, everyone becomes much more motivated to drive safely to prevent someone else from becoming an unfortunate statistic.

Alarming Florida Car Accident Statistics

Florida now has developed a reputation as a state where car accidents occur with unfortunate frequency.  Some of the statistics gathered by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles show the following for 2017:

  • 402,385 overall car crashes,
  • 2,924 fatal car accidents (with 3,116 actual fatalities),
  • 166,612 car accidents that resulted in injuries (with 254,310 parties injured),
  • 16,573 car accidents caused incapacitating injuries,
  • Alcohol was involved in 5,125 car accidents,
  • 374 people died in alcohol-related car crashes and 3,035 were injured,
  • Drugs were confirmed to be involved in 668 car accidents (resulting in 338 fatalities and 589 injured parties),
  • 9,707 accidents involved motorcycles (resulting in 515 fatalities and 7,725 injuries),
  • 9,420 crashes involved pedestrians (659 caused fatalities and 8,126 were injured,
  • 6,672 crashes involved bicyclists (128 caused fatalities and 6,263 were injured).

Although car accident statistics for the state of Florida as a whole are worrying, within the state itself Broward County and the Fort Lauderdale area have the second-worst record when it comes to accident statistics—with 40,703 car accidents causing 24,748 injuries in Broward County alone.

Skilled Lawyers Lawlor, White & Murphey Understand the Florida Statistics and Fight to Protect Car Crash Victims’ Rights

Although it’s hard to explain exactly why Florida has so many car crashes each year, the Florida car accident statistics are indicative of at least one thing—if you reside in Fort Lauderdale or South Florida, you are very likely to be involved in a car accident at some point in your life.  In some cases, you may be fortunate to walk away from the accident with a few scrapes and bruises. In other cases, the resulting injuries can change your life forever.

At Lawlor, White & Murphey, our skilled car accident lawyers are passionate about protecting car accident victims’ rights.  We fight to make sure you receive the maximum amount of compensatory damages possible so that you have the funds necessary to get the medical treatment you need and move on with your life.  If you are one of the more than 250,000 people injured in Florida car accidents every year, you know that the statistics cannot provide insight into how the injuries have impacted your life.  We’re dedicated to getting to know our clients so that we can formulate a custom-made demand package for compensation that covers:

  • All of your medical expenses, past and future,
  • The cost of rehabilitative care, physical therapy and any ongoing treatment,
  • Prescription drugs,
  • Lost wages, salary and employment benefits,
  • Lost future earning capacity,
  • Emotional counseling,
  • Pain and suffering,
  • Loss of enjoyment of life,
  • Loss of financial support or consortium in wrongful death cases,
  • Punitive damages if appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Florida Car Accident Statistics

FAQ: Do Florida car accident statistics indicate that the roads are getting safer or more dangerous?

The statistics are fairly inconclusive, although there are some positive signs.  For example, the number of car accidents that resulted in incapacitating injuries decreased by almost 1,000 between 2016 and 2017, and the number of fatalities resulting from Florida car crashes also declined during that period.  Despite this, it’s unclear whether this is because Florida drivers are exercising greater caution on the roads or because vehicles in general are becoming more safe.

FAQ: Are there any statistics about how the age of the driver can impact the likelihood that an accident will occur?

The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles releases statistics breaking down the number of accidents involving teen or young adult drivers.  For 2017, 130,294 car accidents involved drivers between the ages of 15 and 24. This means that approximately 32 percent of all of the car accidents that occurred in Florida in 2017 involved at least one driver under the age of 25, but the statistics do not speak to fault in these accidents—meaning that it is not conclusive that younger drivers in Florida actually caused more crashes.
